Project Overview & Design Philosophy
Stepping into Weilisi is like escaping the concrete jungle for a peaceful, nomadic retreat. Designed by Basalt Studio, the space looks completely different from clinical wellness archetypes.

The design leans into tactile shopfitting elements. Timber screening, rope detailing and custom-fabricated structures establish a sense of grounding. Warm lighting, soft textures, and private cocoons create the ultimate sanctuary from the cold. Weilisi is located in Macquarie Shopping Centre, but you may feel like you’re in Inner Mongolia.
Custom Joinery and Spatial Innovation
The defining feature of Weilisi is the presence of cosy “yurts”. These are circular, portable dwellings traditionally used by nomadic tribes in Central Asia. Custom-built, these treatment pods provide privacy while contributing a natural, flowing look to the floorplan.

Each yurt is upholstered in soft, neutral-toned canvas fabric and bounded by heavy ropes. Thick, geometric-patterned drapery acts as the door, sealing patrons away from the outside world.
Inside each yurt, the fabrication details continue with sturdy massage beds, dark structural framing and integrated overhead lighting. The intention was to provide a functional workspace for the massage therapist and a relaxing ambience for the patron.
Reception counter
At the front of Weilisi, a reception desk elegantly greets patrons. It features a stone facade, custom-designed signage, and a solid top counter. Behind it, timber partition pillars rise from floor-to-ceiling.
Shopfitting & Project Management
A key challenge of this commercial fitout was the integration of organic fibres and textiles across the ceiling and wall planes.
To soften the industrial look of the ceiling, draped fabric panels were suspended across the length of Weilisi. The dropped fabric functions both as a noise dampener and a diffuser for the warm lighting.
In the section facing Macquarie Centre, a boundary wall features a steel mesh that has hundreds of knotted ropes woven on. This design feature adds feelings of familiarity and comfort to the seating area, where patrons rest in reflexology recliners.

Whether the clinic is catering to a sports professional or a corporate worker, the fitout elevates the therapy experience. The custom-fabricated yurts, fabric detailing and ambient lighting are a few elements that establish calmness.
Delivering specialised services across remedial massage, reflexology, acupuncture, dry needling and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), WEILISI is on the 4th floor of Macquarie Shopping Centre.
